Apparently having anticipated the invention of scuba diving, old Captain Jabez Warren left a complicated series of clues, pinpointing the exact location of the treasure chest he was forced to heave overboard in a desperate attempt to avoid its capture by pirates. The clues, which center on a cane owned by a Portuguese fisherman and the figurehead representation of the Captain himself, are deciphered by young Lynn with the help of her brother and sister. But why the captain should have recorded the location in messages he intended for his wife (this in 1812, when recovery would have been impossible) remains the real mystery in an otherwise predictable chain of circumstance.
