The Amistad case is a many times told tale. The latest adult version was William Owens' Slave Mutiny (John Day- see report P. 177); this lively account for younger readers is, for its age level, thoroughgoing and penetrating. The revolt of the blacks in the slave ship is told as the story of young Kale, of the Mandi tribe, and the international as well as the national issues involved come clear in his story. A good deal of the Mandi culture is revealed. And a strong case is made for the leader, Cinque. A fictional note is struck in the account of the friendship between Kale and young Enoch Hopkins, on the New England farm where he stayed until he decided to return home.
