THE WOMAN'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HEALTH AND NATURAL HEALING

Easy-going advice--Acne to Wrinkles--with the Prevention magazine slant. Senior editor Padus strives to find a balance between ""modern"" medicine and self-care, and to a large extent succeeds. Her basic guidelines: prevent illness by having good health habits; treat any problems that develop with natural remedies as far as possible; be aware of the pitfalls when you must resort to medical treatment. She is straightforward and relaxed whether addressing controversial topics (the Pill is not advised) or mere curiosities (bust-developers--she tested them--still don't work); or warning against clothing with special hazards for women--too-tight jeans, synthetic fibers, unfit shoes. The one drawback is her megavitamin-and-micronutrient approach to some common complaints (especially dangerous: potassium for fatigue); but she has kept it out of much of the material. With limitations, then, a welcome change from such recent ultra-feminist heavies as A New View of a Woman's Body (p. 915).
