THE ART OF SPYING

Authenticity marks each anecdote which Mr. Altavilla has collected from various espionage agencies around the world. He claims his stories are firsthand and often names his informant. Alas there are no James Bonds or Pussy Galores in the real world of spies; it is tenanted by tedium and patience. Altavilla tells a good deal about methods of recruitment as well as mechanical devices; microfilm dots the page. He also tells more about how spies operate than what they uncover, since the agencies' primary interest is to know what does the enemy know about one's defenses, and what does the enemy know you know the enemy knows. Counterespionage is the real subject of this book, and it is informative enough rather than definitive.
