by Enrique Amorin ‧ RELEASE DATE: N/A
A novel of Uruguay today, -- partially symbolic, occasionally obscure, and with those limitations -- from the North American angle -- that make so many South American novels difficult for us to read. An inchoate story of two brothers, Nice and Manuele, the one interested only in his thoroughbreds and hopes of an hair; the other a refugee smuggler. Manuelo shifts his unwanted attentions from his sister-in-law to her housemaid, Bica, who turns out to be Adelita's half-sister and illegitimate. Adelita's baby dies; Nico is killed; and Bica, pregnant through Manuelo, alone finds peace with her fatherless baby. Don't know quite where it is getting -- but there it is.
