A countryman with a penchant for country things (cf. Eric Sloane's Almanac and Weather Forecaster, Folklore of American Weather, etc.) proceeds at the pace of a ruminative ramble as he remarks upon the life and times of wood in New England. Wood used for fuel, for fencing, for charcoal, for building, for boxes, for medicine; wood planted for food in the form of an apple orchard; then there's his mentor-friend. Harley's Seek-no-further apple tree which provides the refrain for this stroll taken in different settings through the years. The illustrations of wooden objects contribute to what is a minor essay of early American appeal.
