Roger and Kate Starte (of the earlier Dragoman Pass) again give a personal inflection to this story of a second freelance mission through forbidden terrain-this time Eastern Serbia, and it is just in the use of everyday detail that this adventure seems true to life and death behind the Iron Curtain. Asked, in England, by a Major Hampton to retrieve some incriminating records in a cave where the bodies of six men lie buried with a cache of gold, and given an additional assignment by Intelligence to photograph some rocket platforms, they proceed to Belgrade and from the first experience strict surveillance. Further warnings do not deter them and with the help of a doctor, a frightened man, they reach their objective to face the assault of a once cooperative, now crazed peasant. A happy-go-lucky American (whom they had helped) makes possible their return to Belgrade where the Embassy refuses the gift of the gold; making a hurried exit, they face arrest and an indeterminate stay when the damaging papers prove to be their safe passport.... A tense tour of a police state; it is exciting to follow.
