No one had succeeded in escape from Stalag Luft Three, the German prisoner of war camp. But excavating in an open field, in full sight of the sentry towers, R.A.F. officers Peter Howard and John Clinton tunneled past the barbed wire boundaries of their prison. They camouflaged their three months of digging with a wooden vaulting horse. The raw-edged uncertainty that followed as they jumped a train to Frankfurt, are chased on the docks at Stettin, a Baltic port, maneuvering with forged documents, is made even more harrowing through the author's juxtaposition of understatement and humor. Eric Williams first told this story in 1950 (Harper) and it has been very little changed in this new edition for younger readers here. A superb escape story, brilliantly narrated.
