What's the ""new look"" in extraterrestrial communication? Well, von Daniken trades in his chariot for interstellar thought-transference by means of flashes from ""the gods""--those travelers who have been lighting up intelligence stations around the universe. They're responsible for Homo sapiens' discovery of miraculous images of the double helix, subatomic physics, carbon chains, relativity and so on. In support of this he offers a natural history of visions, focusing mainly on Christian miracles--not that he believes in the divinity of Christ or in the Bible as God's infallible Word. He also demolishes a great array of Christian mystics (hysterics who receive ""the stigmata"" or see the Virgin floating about) while preparing to reveal his own notion of what visions are. A lost Catholic, he finds hope in parapsychology which makes clear the ""illuminations which great men get from the extraterrestrials"" who are intent on opening up our consciousness. Not cynical but not convincing either, von Daniken (and his readers) might well ponder Malachi Martin's Hostage to the Devil (p. 50) to see what can happen to a man who got carried away--far away.
