True story in fictionized form of Madeleine de Vercheres, who in 1692, with her two younger brothers and an old servant, held off the Mohawks for a whole week and protected the stockades fort of Vercheres with all the women and children hidden in the blockhouse behind it. Her own account of the siege was recorded by the governor of New France in the upper St. Lawrence and this story is based on that record. Dramatic, authentic material well handled, with tolerance and sympathy for the brave noblesse of royalist new France. A good story with a quaint foreign flavor; exceptional background material for school libraries.
