Childhood revisited--the small Wisconsin farming community where the author was born in 1887 is recalled and idealized with grace in these pleasant memoirs. The local church, its pillars and suppers, gypsy peddlars, hired help, threshings, spring cleanings and the strictness of abiding pioneer Americans are enriched as the bits and pieces of memory are tied together in skeins of personal time. ""Subjective"" time, the author calls it, more important for the emotions recollected than for the incidents that provoked them. In fact, many of her anecdotes sound like parables that give an underprivileged look to the urbane children of today. Yet, it is exactly this fondness for that time when every home harbored the Bible in closet company with The Complete Poetical Works of Ilenry Wadsworth Longfollow that gives her book something of an inspirational quality. Sure to strike a sympathetic chord from Ladies' Clubs in areas that remember the value of a halcyon rural background.
