Here's a book that is chockful of faults, that doesn't ""stay by"" you, but that is absorbing reading while in the process of reading. And that after all, is the best test -- it is interesting. The story revolves around a German-American, formerly a popular stage favorite on both sides of the Atlantic. Opposition to the Nazi regime and a clever deal in getting around them, lands her in prison, and a mock trial condemns her to death. An illness postpones her sentence, and gives her son, and an old family servant, and the doctor in attendance a chance to plot her escape. The rest of the story follows the steps, with well-sustained suspense. A good yarn.
