A HORSE'S HEAD

Grant that the designation is ours rather than the author's or publisher's--this is a light comedy of male menopause. It would make a fine movie vehicle, motor-governed to Jack Lemm on's speed and it's lots lighter and brighter than Hunter's big sellers that went to Hollywood--The Blackboard Jungle and Strangers When We Meet. It's all about the killingly scheduled hours in the life of Mullaney who was standing on the corner of 14th Street down to his last few cents, with a hot tip on a horse called Jawbone and no place to raise the money for a bet, when along comes this limousine...Mullaney had been abducted by a Mafia-esque mob that needed a stand-in for a corpse. From there on it's hairsbreadth chase and escape through Manhattan and environs for over 48 hours. Mullaney, the forty-ish, ex- encyclopedia salesman, who had thrown over his wife when he threw up his job in order to have one, year-long fling on the horses, gets chased right into middle-age. You kind of hate to see him go.
