On an April night in 1958 Sir Sebastian Carr, distinguished and handsome British scientist, goes to Carnegie Hall to hear a concert by the world famous Corsican pianist Giro Deborge. As she plays his mind harks back to the past... They met and had a madly passionate affair before the War, then separated after many arguments because she would not give up her career to become his wife and he loved her too much to share her with her Steinway. He has loved her always, however, and at intermission he is warmly received by her backstage. As she plays the second half of the program Sir Sebastian falls dead because of some obscure brain disease connected with his research... The novel's theme is art vs. science, but beyond this it seems incoherent and rather baffling. Very emotional and high-strung in structure and style, this is definitely for women readers with a taste for grand passions in B flat minor.
