The winner of the All-Canada Fiction Award returns to a small island in the 19th century, where the sea, and the ships, and the men who go down with them, weather the women who wait. This is Marcy Nickerson's story, from the time when she marries the salvaged passenger of a Boston-bound ship, handsome, Irish, Dan Redmond. Dan takes her to the deserted and desolate island he christens New Erin- and the first break between them comes when she finds their child branded by his Catholocism as ""born out of wedlock"". Time is to heal the barrier; other children follow; but Dan engages in a smuggler's traffic which is to make them rich but alienates the community- and her family. A gale, the loss of a last, late child, her father, and all Dan's wealth sets them off to a fresh start-on a better basis.... Firm values and ample sentiment and incident will direct this toward a feminine market.
