Turning to a different aspect of a region the author knows (see Tree Wagon-1953 and Captain Apple's Ghost- 1952)- Oregon- here is a long, serious story about the Indian relations in the time of white settlement and the first reservations. With a Rogue River boy, Tom, as its hero, it is centered around his captivity as a slave by the Yambills. Away from his mountain home where he had position as the son witch doctor mother, Tom's life is a triangle- of suffering from the hateful Yamhills, of a search for a vision that will bring him power, and of friendship with Andy Fuller, a farmer's son. Later when Tom has learned English, he is instrumental in establishing peace between the Army, the Indians and the government agents and he finds his power in Christianity. Based on true incidents, this, though slow moving, has its historical value.
