Lawyer-sleuth Robert Forsy the has given his capable, middle-aged secretary Abigail Sanderson (A Death for a Doctor, etc.) an assignment in a fading Midlands town--site of a nursing home endowed by Jamie Coralund, scion of the town's leading family who vanished 30 years ago. Jamie's older sister Agnes, now living in the US, has asked Forsythe to settle a dispute among the trustees of the home about bringing in dogs as companions to the elderly patients--an inspiration of William Perkins', owner of Perky Puppy Puffs. Abigail settles in at the Fiddle and Bow. a local pub-hotel whose belligerent owner Harry Moore is one of the four trustees. The others are prosperous antiques-dealer Sean Ackerson; shabby librarian Leroy Doff; and agelessly beautiful Hilary Coralund--Jamie's fianc‚e at the time of his disappearance and still under his spell (as the others seem to be under hers). Visiting the home, Abigail meets Jamie's old nurse Nanny Balfour, now in her 90s and becoming senile. A day later she's found dead--mot of natural causes--and one of the dogs already in residence has been poisoned. Abigail thinks she knows why--and proves it with the uncovering of a long-buried secret. With Inspector Taylor's blessing, Forsythe joins his secretary in trying to resurrect ancient events--and tangled relationships--to find a killer from the past reactivated in the present. Steadily diverting, despite its sometimes uneasy mix of arch humor and high drama. Medium-plus Giroux.
