THE MYSTERIOUS MARQUIS

An ambling, homey, underpowering Regency romance set in Scotland and London, in which a lass of respectable but undistinguished social standing bags a neighboring marquis. Elizabeth Ridgeway, at 25 on the way to the spinster shelf, has been for some time the happy companion and secretary to her kind archeologist widower father. Now back in chilly Scotland, Elizabeth welcomes the diversion of entertaining the young boy Rowan, whom she rescued from a spill in the ""burn."" Rowan turns out to be the neglected small son of Elizabeth's mysterious neighbor, the Marquis of Sanquhar, whose ""incredibly handsome"" person blazes into Scotland. Against her will, Elizabeth is drawn to the unaccountably gracious marquis. Young Alicia Hardin has been similarly smitten and her father, Sir Robert, has sent his callow nephew Oliver on a spying expedition to Scotland to investigate the marquis' background. Oliver, along with a dastardly pal, will search out the marquis' father, the Duke of Sutherland, who's very obviously at odds with his son. It will be Elizabeth who not only brings young Rowan and his father together but melts the ducal heart. At the close there's a kidnap, chase, and a mutual exchange of regard by Elizabeth and the marquis, while Alicia finds another True Love. Mild.
