Ms. Kerguelen is a future Modesty Blaise who vanquishes strong men in hand-to-hand combat, masters the trivia of weapons-installation engineering in a few hours, and knows ""how to give pleasure"" the way Horowitz knows the ivories, even if her ""body has never responded fully to any man."" The shapeless plot involves Rissa's marriage into an offworld branch of the family that helped her escape from the totalitarian regime on Earth, and an attempt to mount a war against the same hydraheaded government. Long, clunky, and written in a prose something like polyurethane cardboard-substitute. Part II to come.
