Two girls and a boy and a horse complicate each others' lives for a lively spell in California in the days when it was part of Mexico. Elena and Isabel, daughter and ward of Don Jose Aguila, a landowner near Santa Barbara, have barely found the filly La Dorada, when Robert Winfield enters their lives too- on a ship from the east to trade in hides. There is plenty of color as their three way friendship grows- rodeos, roundups etc. and an authentic picture of old California. But when Robert and Isabel fall in love the romance problem is only partly settled for Isabel is betrothed to another for a more socially advantageous marriage. How it works out the right way with the filly playing her part, makes good light reading by the popular author.
