..... is Mutt who was ""immutably resolved that there was no future in being a dog"" but who never made the mistake of trying to become human. His highly individual quirks -- along with the immovable personalities of the Mowat household -- pile up some near hysteria, neo-classic boy-cum-dog versus world situations. This is a dog with a mature outlook, resolution, dignity; a dog who is sulky, vocal, complaining, long suffering; a dog who must have left his mark on Saskatoon, Sask., Canada, in the early '30's. Perverse fate was his pursuer whether it was in his becoming a hunting dog (from failure he developed a special genius), or riding in Eardlie, the model T Ford, or in coping with Father, a librarian who was a landlocked sailor, or in holding to his policies of non-violence in a new community and learning to walk fences, climb trees and ladders, or in existing with other animals -- cats, dogs, skunks and especially the horned owl, or even in fishing for crawfish and frogs.... This takes care of -- most competently and cajolingly -- a life with plenty of elbow room which is also endowed with humor, plentiful and warm. Good boy!
