The Polar Passion takes up roughly where Mowat's earlier Ordeal by Ice left off; by 1850, the quest for the Northwest Passage had given way to that for the North Pole. Here, except for two early entries in 997 and 1616 A.D. respectively, the selections from Arctic journals come from the period following this date. Mr. Mowat has modernized where he felt necessary, condensed Or eliminated repetitive material, chosen for relevance. The selections are to be read ""for what they are--moving, sometimes, humorous, often tragic accounts of enduring men in conflict."" Mr. Mowat is concerned with the dismissal of the North American Arctic as useless, compares the Soviet use of it, and opts for the return to ""the primal virtues of a tough, unflinching, physically competent durable and daring animal."" His book is a handsome compass pointing due North.
