Model child Nicholas de Luca is actually one of those little monsters -- ex-ex-ex -- and in the beginning he seems to be ""afflicted"" with a double or a Dybbuk, who speaks to him via the planchette. Peter Mazur, a school board psychologist, becomes wholly involved in his case (and Nicholas' helpless mother) and structures a whole thesis to accommodate and exonerate Nicholas. Until too late -- much too late particularly for the old retainer found in the freezer -- when Mazur realizes that in using him he's the one who's really been used. . . . Only mildly malignant but quite readable.
