A partially rewritten edition of a novel published in 1951 (p. 366). As seen through the eyes of his ten year old son Little Eli, widowed Big Eli's life, after he moves from Tennessee to Texas early in the nineteenth century, has its share of troubles. But feuds, financial difficulties and so forth are straightened out with the help of redheaded bond servant Hannah, whom Big Eli marries, and are topped off with the decision to go to Texas. Previously noted was the book's stronger value as a period characterization than a stirring story. Perhaps for twelve to fifteen too.
