What a family- and what a contribution they have made to our country's growth, intellectually, industrially, economically. Their story- from Old Percival who founded the family in America in 1639 through President Lowell of Harvard, who died during the recent war, is indeed ""a history of the heart, mind, imagination, animal spirits and pocketbooks of New England"". Only, perhaps, the Adams can rival them and their credit entry may be larger but the Lowells' credit entry is longer, with twelve leaders over three centuries and scarcely a mediocrity in the whole roster. Mr. Creenslet has tapped a rich vein in the revealing mass of correspondence, diaries, memoranda which the family made available to him. He has told the story of the family, generation by generation, against a rich background of a new nation in the making. He has highlighted the successive eras, the contributions in fields of literature, business, statesmanship, civic leadership and humanity. An important book -- perhaps not for quick and wide sales, but for the long range.
