The American Minister to Norway during the three years climaxed by the invasion (Mrs. J. Borden Harriman) gives a gracious, appreciative backward look over a country and a people she grew to love. The embassy world, legation life, trips to the North Cape, to Russia, cod fishing; the lifelines of the country -- ships and silver foxes and handicrafts -- a friendly warm book, with singularly little significance in the present crisis. The coup on the City of Flint seems to be her one and only diplomatic contribution. There is little of political or diplomatic or topical import in her story, and the impression left is of a singular unawareness of the interpretative value her position might have had.
