Down deep gun and camera again, this time from the Italian National Underwater Expedition, is reported by the head of the documentary division and illustrated by both the author's and Glorgie Raveill's black and white and color photographs. Introduced by the aims of and preparations for the assignment, this traces the course of the Formica and the three teams, armament and equipment that traveled to the Red Sea and made its headquarters at Massaua. It's a big catch of tuna, firefish, sardines, boxfish, rhinoceros, butterfly, char manta, moray, trumpet, key, parrot, black, on to their pet goal -- shark --and even an adventure with whales; there's the vegetation of the tropical reefs and bottoms, the wrecks, and the mastery of living horizontally; there are the discouragements and the triumphs and the problems of filming a colorful stage and its gaudy actors. And there are the new facts general; you can kill a shark with tea; even man-eating sharks are confounded by humans and seek flight when confronted; the value of harpooning with curare; and many others. A brisk run through of new worlds conquered, this joins a growing library of marine exploration and exploits and does not suffer by comparison.
