A spongy jumble of harmless, unmemorable articles on what economists are wont to call ""exogenous"" trends -- non-economic influences on the economy such as demographic shifts, consumer predilections (the clothing market is now a bellwether, we're told, and there's ""excitement in men's underwear""), pollution control efforts and automobile production (in any event ""the car will remain king""), war and the current winding-down psychology, and the effects of political tides on economic health. In all, eight popularly written overviews by Fortune staffers which appeared in somewhat modified form in that magazine's August, 1971, issue on some well-chewed socioeconomic topics bound by the theme of who-knows-what's-ahead.
