With the pleasing lilt of folklore, a tale about a loving but poor family celebrating Hanukkah. Though their food is nearly gone, they take in a dog and cat; later, the dog unearths potatoes, while the cat finds apples in a snow-covered tree--perhaps not a miracle, but heartwarming luck that provides the traditional meal. Spowart's soft, generalized figures and rich colors nicely reflect the story's warmth and traditional flavor.
