MARTA FINDS THE GOLDEN DOOR

This sort of story is needed just now. It could be better done than this, but none the less, it is a thoroughly readable story with a motive that has real significance. It is the story of a little Austrian refugee, of her exciting escape from Austria, her separation from her father, her loss of everything except the doll which she had had the wit to use as a hiding place, and of her coming to America. There is still to be told a story less fortunate for its character, but this is a good opening wedge. In vocabulary and format -- type face, etc. -- this might fit third and fourth grade children, but older ones will also find it interesting.
