Up Michigan way nurse Lauren Gillies, with a concert pianist for a mother and a disappointed engineer professor for a father, has set her heart on the-boy-next-door, Mark Sadler, and his close, friendly family, for her future. This is ruined when Mark returns from an archeological dig with his bride, Belinda. Her broken-heart-mending is the project of Mark's young sister, Katie, who has been nursed through polio by Lauren. Katie's loyalty to Lauren is the means of ostracizing Belinda from the Sadler family as well as the community and it takes a new bean, scandal about Belinda and some home truths to snap Lauren into championing Belinda and locating her own real heart interest.
