A companion to the author's Sargasso Sea (1975), introducing the intercontinental sea whose waters (at 70° to 94° F) are ""among the saltiest and hottest on earth."" Jacobs touches on the Sea in ancient history and biblical legend; lingers awhile with the corals and the millions of other creatures who live ""on the reef""--a collection of teeming ""urban centers"" which contain more limestone than all the buildings of Europe and North America combined; and she ends with a little geology. The recent discovery of hot brine pools rich in metal deposits has not only aroused commercial interest but stimulated further studies, based on plate tectonics, which indicate that today's Red Sea is on its way to becoming a major ocean.
