The background of the brief war with France takes full precedence over the adventure, intrigue and espionage aspects of this contemporary story. The book presents a picture of the Fifth Column at work among the higher-ups. Granby of the British intelligence and his young side, Orford, are in Paris getting the facts on certain key people. They go through the third degree, explosive activities at the front, in the game of I Spy, and eventually witness the default of France. Though the story angle leaves a good deal to be desired, it is more than compensated for by the background.
