SQUARCIO, THE FISHERMAN

A novella, in translation from the Italian, has a lean vigor and strips down the life of an island fisherman who dynamited- illegally- for his catch, and, while the most skillful of his generation, knew that the ""eventualities are accepted from the start"". Enjoying his evasion of the tenacious coastguards particularly the foolish, frustrated Gaspare- it is not until he is fifty that, Squarcio faces the loss of his living and eventually his life. About to be caught, he is forced to sink his boat; the payments on his home cannot be met; and only much later, when he can secretly salvage his motor and buy another boat, does he go out on the last fatal expedition..... Solinas invests a certain excitement as well as an air of inevitability in this small story which will be difficult to place- particularly with its alien setting.
