Judging from the results of the first two sessions of Vatican Council II, the progressives have been dominating the deliberations. It seems strange, therefore, that this book should appear at this time to demonstrate why the Church must change with the times. Yet here it is. A sociologist in simple and readable style analyzes what is happening in the world to force the Church into the ""aggiornamento"" advocated by Pope John. The popular style tends to alienate by its concern with explaining even the simple things. Had it been written two years ago perhaps it would have had an impact. Now it seems to confirm what is known. On the other hand, it may be important for lay people who find any change difficult to accept, to have reasons offered for it. This the book will do. At best this sounds like an extended lecture on why what the Council is effecting should be considered good. But priests and teachers might find the book a basic reference for amplifying their own comments on why the Church is changing.
