Good lemonade is the one thing Hank doesn't provide at his stand, and until he gets wise and improves the product neither his billboards, decorated cups, free prizes, girls in bikinis, nor the promotion trick of diving into a tub dressed as Mr. Lemon can lure back the neighborhood trade he lost after the first day. But if this straight, too literal fable is to carry any punch at all, it badly needs a fresh slant or filter--just what Asch's own wiggy illustration style might be counted on to provide. Instead Marie Zimmerman's brightly colored, tie-dyed, interracial gang of children (the Health-tex kids without Perls' quirky distinctiveness either) are so resolutely cheerful and typical that neither the bizarre outrageousness of the parodied practices (one exception: those flat figured little girls in bikinis are, to be sure, suitably freakish) nor the sensual pleasure of a cold glass of good lemonade comes through.
