. . . or STORIES MY GRANDFATHER TOLD ME-- not the usual haunts of the Hudson, but Grandpa's feats outwitting Indians, panthers, mosquitoes, etc., all of which could just as easily have taken place in Wisconsin or New Jersey. Each unrelated episode is served up with milk and molasses cookies, perhaps as a reward to the boy for staying power: he's no doubt come across many of the situations (cattle freezing in popcorn snow, mosquitoes pinned down by their ""bills,"" ""sidehill gougers"" with two short legs and two long) in Paul Bunyan. The book adds nothing new to storytelling or to the Hunters' and Trappers' Mystique; its too bad it doesn't live up to the Peter Parnall drawings.
