The solar system has many parts--the sun, the nine planets, the satellites of the planets, asteroids, comets, and meter meteoroids. But the main parts are the sun and the nine planets."" At this point--the 15th two-to-four-line paragraph in a book containing only twice that many--Branley has already introduced each of the many parts and backed up his words with a brisk variety of drawings, diagrams, and photos (these last unavailable in 1966 when Branley last revised his Book of Planets for You). Now we see all parts of the system together, with an arced ""edge of the sun"" as a reference point. Next comes an equally succinct and clear briefing on the duration of the individual planets' orbits and their relative size and distance from the sun (and consequent temperature differences), plus a statement of the earth's uniqueness as ""the life planet."" With directions for making a solar system mobile and a wall chart to reinforce the lesson, an orienting first look at the solar system.
