Here, for the student of American folklore for the singer, professional or amateur, for the jazz and blues fan, is an extensive study of American Negro music. By visiting individual Negro families throughout the South, the author recreates the spirit which initially gave rise to blues and which to a large extent still exerts its influence. He describes locale and individuals, reconstructs atmosphere and events, both in his language and in the words of his subjects, and reproduces sung texts as he has heard them. Revival songs, works songs, laments, love songs, social commentaries, are all given in their context. French and Voodoo influences are traced.
