The complex circumstances surrounding the Battle of New Orleans are aired in a story that centers on a young French boy's role in the attempts to persuade Lafitte to fight for the American side. As an example of the many loyalties splitting the city, Philip Duval, who works in the lawyer Edward Livingston's office, is in a quandary himself as his father never gave acceptance to the Louisiana Purchase. But under the British threat Philip helps get a message to Lafitte who in the hope of pardon, decides to fight for the Americans- where his true sympaties lie in spite of Gov. Claiborne's hostility. The Duvals too, see the purpose of new unity and play their part in winning the day with Jackson's forces. Patriotic.
