The story behind Log of the Fetsy Ann (McBride, 1933), still a favorite of mine. This traces his passion for steam packets and towboats, on the Ohio, and now it led him into family dissension, youthful blunders, leaving college (no civil engineering for him!) The chance of a job which kept him near the river, then other jobs came along in freighting, as clerk, as purser, picking up crumbs of piloting when he could. Jobs disappeared and he went back to college, just until he could get back to the river. There is a collection of river stories, of major mistakes, of boats yesterday and today, of the changing face of river transportation. There are cargoes, passengers, a tornado. And there's the same contagious enthusiasm, grand reading of a beloved profession.
