To introduce Southeast Asia in eighty-five pages is suspect; it is even more questionable when more than sixty of those pages contain full or partial illustrations. Mission impossible becomes omission probable: what is excluded is anything that swerves from the image of a benevolent United States and much of the finer texture of each country. The three sections (Rice, Rubber & Tin; the Nations that were Indochina; the Island Republics) are further subdivided into individual countries, concentrating thousands of years of history into a few sentences, ostensibly explaining modern circumstances but actually giving variously incomplete representations. Despite these very serious reservations it's somewhat closer to the facts--and much more timely--than Caldwell's (1957) Let's Visit Southeast Asia if you want to take the area in one swig.
