Shore Leave was something of a surprise seller; the publishers are making no surprise of this- his second book- and with the B.O.M. selection behind it, it is headed for the big time. This is first of all a deadly, decimating, inside track on America's booster business, advertising,- its premises which extend from Radio City to Wall Street to El Moroooo,- its bluechip companies, rich reactionaries, down to the lesser leeches, the ad men, press agents, talent scouts. It is secondly the story of Vic Norman, a very sharp young man, and the game he plays which is just a little smarter than the next guy's. A bachelor addicted to brief romances and a radio man afraid of long term contracts, Vic becomes the account executive for the biggest proposition in the business, Beautee Soap, angles his way with Evans- its ozar, survives where many before him have failed, and keeps his head until he meets Kay Dorrance, on the way to the Coast. Vic is attracted by Kay's serenity and composure, by her two youngsters, and they fall in love, have an intense affair which for the first time makes Vic think of marriage- and a family, but which he gives up out of decency to Kay's husband overseas. A smart, bright book, which is always entertaining, sometimes a little more serious, and which- with its charged love affair- has a strong appeal.
