The years 1997 to 2001 are starduster Max Andrews' chance to make real his dream of a rocket trip to Jupiter and his scheme to get Ellen Gallagher elected to the Senate pays off. Their plans, to get appropriations and public approval, are worked out carefully and successfully and, with Ellen's death, Max carries on. When his claim to spacemanship is exposed he is willing to stay on as mechanic to help the project and to affirm his belief in interplanetary travel. A serious SF novel, this avoids the gimmicks and emphasizes the possible techniques of the future. Persuasive.
