OONGA BOONGA

What an uproar! Nothing makes baby Louise stop crying--not Dad whispering softly in her ear or Grandma feeding her, not Mozart or rock or a change of diaper or a change of venue--until her brother Daniel cheers her up by saying ""Oonga Boonga!""--and with his own smiling face. At first, it seems to be the words that do the trick; later, it turns out that Daniel himself has a special touch. Wishinsky neatly combines a realistic summary of baby-comforting techniques with a special triumph for a slightly older sibling. Stevenson illustrates this warmhearted family vignette with her usual dash, humor, and sympathy. A nice choice for the preschool set.
