This is drawn from the Baburnama and was translated from the German. Its history then is -- from Tatar to Persian to German to an English that can only be described as overblown. It deals with Zadir Ed-din Mohammed's first war in 1495, when, at the age of twelve, he had come to the throne. From flitter-witted school boy to pompous conqueror is 188 pages of the kind of verbiage that is dear only to the hearts of the Hollywood ""spectacle"" makers. As if to point up this turgidity, the illustrations are swiftly scratched and insect fragile. They have humor and since the Zadir was in deadly earnest it makes an odd juxtaposition. Face the East and let it go West.
