A new translation by Andrew R. MacAndrew of the work which is known here, if at all, as A Raw Youth in the Constance Garnett translation now out of print. Against the same ""metaphysical and social landscape"" as the four other major novels, it is the story of ""a nineteen-year-old searching for identity amidst the disorder of Russian society of the 1870's"" and there is a long introduction by Professor MacAndrew, of the University of Virginia, and the prominent translator of Dostoevsky as well as Tolstoy, Babel, etc.
