A series of stories about a large French-Canadian family who live on rue Deschambault near Winnipeg is told by the youngest of the family, Christine. They most often deal with her father and mother and with her own growing up, but this is not a Life with Papa and Mama. The stories vary greatly in mood, in purpose, in length, but never in sensitivity. Some capture only an atmosphere or an emotion or an odd moment; others are full-fledged, well-wrought tales of real people growing, changing. Some are very amusing and most are touched with humor in delicate ways, but the tone of the whole is of sadness, of lost dreams, of adjusting illusions to life... A lovely and appealing book, written with great skill.
