A story of an isolated island settlement, in Manitoba, which reflects the innocent gaiety and breadth of heart of its leading lady, Luzina Tousignant, who leaves her home along the Little Water Hen once a year -- to bring back a new baby. And as Luzina's attempt to populate the island fills out the quota (six of school age) required to establish a school, it is her husband Hippolyte who erects the school house, while a teacher is anxiously awaited. The first year brings one who is pretty and pleasant; the second, an embattled Englishwoman; the third (and last) a young man who devotes more of his time to gaming than the Tousignant children. But Luzina's love of learning is undefeated even though a replacement is never sent, and the youngsters leave home for schooling elsewhere...A loving portrait which has not quite the substance, action-wise, of her earlier The Tin Flute (1947), this commutes charm and understanding.
