STRANGERS

Man has at last achieved space travel, but only on the coattails of higher races. Joseph Farber is among the first Earthlings allowed to participate in the intergalactic ""Commercial Alliance"" voyages. On the planet of Weinunnach, home of the humanid Clan race, Farber has himself chromosomally altered by the native genetic ""tailors"" in order to marry a beautiful Clan girl, Liraun. Love might have conquered all in a universe without cultural misunderstandings, but not in this doomed encounter between a people sure that they know everything and a race with a set of powerful taboos against discussing personal matters. Dozois shapes his bleak love story with fluency and unsentimental compassion. But the scientific underpinnings of the eventual tragedy are rather hastily and meagerly worked in; as a piece of sci-fi craftsmanship this does not live up to the promise of its materials.
